Step inside the Honig Breethuis. Imagine the lives lived within these walls. This charming museum home in Zaandijk tells a fascinating story. Generations of the Honig and Breet families lived here. They were prominent figures in the white paper industry. Cornelis Jacobsz Honig built the house around 1709. He was a co-founder of C & J Honig Breet. The house sits beautifully by the Zaan river.

The Honig Breethuis is more than just a building. It’s a time capsule. It reveals the lives of wealthy families. The museum offers a glimpse into their world. You can see the historic furnishings. You’ll marvel at the hand-painted wallpaper. Jacob Cornelisz Breet and Grietje Jans de Jager lived here in the 1800s. They raised their children Maartje and Jan in this very house. In 1830 Jacob Breet commissioned the Amsterdam wallpaper painter Willem Uppink. Uppink decorated the Garden Room with stunning hand-painted wallpaper. It’s a rare example of this style of decoration. The wallpaper is a highlight of the museum. It has been painstakingly restored.

Behind the main house is a summer house. It offers a breathtaking view of the Zaan river. The impressive Zaankamer room is in the summer house. It has remained virtually unchanged since its construction in 1830. The Honig Breethuis reflects a specific period from 1826 to 1847. The museum is a meticulous reconstruction of the home during this era.

After the Honig family, the house had another chapter. In 1892 the Zaanlandsche Oudheidkamer opened nearby. This was an antiquities room. Jan Jacobsz Breet even loaned items to this new museum. After his death the house was sold. In 1940 it was designated as a museum. It became part of the Zaans Historic Museum. Finally in 1999 it was beautifully restored. It reopened as the Honig Breethuis museum home. This transformation preserved a piece of Zaandijk’s history.

So take your time. Explore every room. Let the history of the Honig Breethuis captivate you. Feel the atmosphere of a bygone era. You are standing where history unfolded. The Honig Breethuis isn’t just a museum. It is a living testament to a family and their legacy. A legacy imprinted onto the walls. A legacy waiting to be discovered.
