What if a bridge could be more than just a crossing? Here at the Prins Clausbrug, it is. This bridge is a striking landmark in Utrecht. It connects Kanaleneiland and Papendorp over the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal.
The Prins Clausbrug is named after Prince Claus. Residents of Kanaleneiland suggested the name. Princess Máxima opened the bridge on June 25, 2003. It was a tribute to her father-in-law.
Ben van Berkel designed this bridge. He is also famous for designing the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. The Prins Clausbrug shares design elements with the Papendorp Bridge.
Look up at the pylon. It’s 92 meters high and leans backwards. Its cross-section changes, drawing the eye. The pylon’s lines create a fascinating display.
The Prins Clausbrug is an asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge. The main span stretches 150 meters over the canal. A side span extends about 80 meters. Two access bridges each measure about 37.5 meters.
The bridge deck combines steel and concrete. Nineteen stay cables support the main and side spans. The bridge rests on five supports. The pylon acts as the fixed point.
Notice the separate paths. The Prins Clausbrug features dedicated cycle lanes. Four lanes accommodate vehicles. Two lanes are for regular traffic. Two lanes are reserved for buses. This design is crucial for bus transport. The bridge is part of the Zuidradiaal bus route. Many buses between Utrecht and areas to the west use this bridge.
The municipality of Utrecht was the client for this project. CFE and Victor Buyck Steel Construction built the bridge.
