“Everyone who can solve the problems of water is worthy of two Nobel prizes one for peace and one for science” These words greet you at the Eindgemaal Rivierenbuurt. This unassuming building on the corner of Kennedylaan and Maasstraat is much more than meets the eye. It’s the final stop for the Rivierenbuurt’s sewage system.
The Eindgemaal Rivierenbuurt isn’t just a pumping station. It’s a carefully designed structure. Architect Marjolein van Eig created this modern marvel. She aimed for minimal disruption to the surrounding greenery. The result is a striking building. It blends seamlessly with its surroundings. Three cube-like volumes stack. They cascade down mimicking the steps leading to the underground reservoir.
Beneath the surface lies a large concrete tank. All the neighborhood’s wastewater flows here. From here it’s pumped to Amsterdam West’s wastewater treatment plant. The above-ground access point is crucial. It allows for maintenance of the complex machinery below.
The Eindgemaal Rivierenbuurt shows its designer’s attention to detail. The brickwork is meticulously detailed. Subtle reliefs add visual interest. They also deter graffiti. The roof is covered in sedum. This provides a haven for insects and amphibians. Van Eig even designed a custom typeface. It’s reminiscent of Amsterdam School typography.
The building’s location is significant. It sits at the intersection of two urban planning visions. Hendrik Petrus Berlage’s Plan Zuid meets Cornelis van Eesteren’s AUP. The placement near the John F Kennedy statue isn’t accidental. It’s a harmonious integration into the existing landscape. The building even incorporates a bench. It shares the same horizontal lines as the structure.
The Eindgemaal Rivierenbuurt is more than a functional pumping station. It’s a testament to thoughtful design. It successfully combines functionality with aesthetics. It showcases a deep respect for the environment and urban context. It’s a subtle yet impactful addition to Amsterdam’s landscape. So next time you are in Amsterdam take a moment to appreciate this hidden gem. This unassuming building quietly plays a crucial role in the city’s infrastructure. It also speaks volumes about thoughtful urban design.
