Fueling Purmerend with warmth. That´s the silent promise BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer fulfills every day. It stands here not just as a power plant. It symbolizes Purmerend’s commitment to a sustainable future.
BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer represents a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions. The BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer replaced an older gas-fired power plant in 2014. This transition marked a pivotal moment for Purmerend. The city moved towards more sustainable energy sources.
The BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer primarily burns wood chips. These are sourced from sustainably managed forests by Staatsbosbeheer. This ensures that the fuel is a byproduct of responsible forestry. It doesn’t contribute to deforestation. Every year around 100000 tons of wood chips are used. This prevents over 50000 tons of CO2 emissions.
Think about the scale. During winter the BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer receives up to 25 truckloads of wood chips daily. The storage bunkers can hold 12500 m3. That’s enough fuel for one week at full power.
BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer meets 80% of the heating needs for 25000 customers. That includes 24000 households and 1000 businesses. The remaining peak demand is covered by two gas-fired auxiliary plants. Plans are underway to replace them with further expansions of the BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer.
The BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer is part of Stadsverwarming Purmerend. It maintains a network of over 550 kilometers of underground pipes. Hot water flows through these pipes. The pipes deliver heat to homes and buildings. This system ensures efficient and reliable heating throughout Purmerend.
The BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer contributes to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. In 2022 the heat network emitted only 26.49 kg of CO2 per GJ of heat. This resulted in a saving of 32.01 kg of CO2 per GJ compared to traditional boilers. There was a leak in 2023. Extra gas had to be purchased. CO2 emissions rose to 49.07 kg per GJ. The saving compared to boilers fell to 16%.
Opened in 2015 by King Willem-Alexander. The BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer represents innovation and sustainability. It exemplifies how cities can transition to greener energy solutions.
As you stand here take a moment to appreciate the impact of this facility. The BioWarmtecentrale De Purmer warms homes and businesses. It also paves the way for a cleaner more sustainable Purmerend.
