Bike parking transformed into public space. The IJboulevard is more than just a pretty walkway. This is a story of innovative design solving a city’s challenges.

Amsterdam, a cyclist’s haven. But this wasn’t always the case. The city invested in cycling infrastructure. The IJboulevard is the latest example.

Opened in February 2023, the IJboulevard sits next to Amsterdam Central Station. It’s located beneath the river IJ. This underwater bike parking facility can hold 4,000 bicycles.

Before the IJboulevard, bikes cluttered the area around Central Station. Abandoned bikes took up valuable space. The IJboulevard solved this problem. It simplifies the cycling experience.

Large, glazed stairwells lead into the parking garage. Daylight streams in. These entrances use the same natural stone as the boulevard. This creates a seamless transition. Inside cyclists find a column-free space. Green lights show available parking spots. The interior features a wooden ceiling and subtle lighting.

By moving parking underground, the IJboulevard gave 6000 square meters back to the public. The roof is now a panoramic pedestrian boulevard. It offers seating areas and views of the river IJ.

Danny Esselman, VenhoevenCS architect, said IJboulevard builds on tradition. It turns functional features into spaces that contribute to urban culture.

The IJboulevard supports the local ecology. It uses eco-friendly materials and reduces energy consumption. Biohuts, wood, and porous concrete provide shelter for aquatic plants. The IJboulevard improves the health of both the city and the river.

The IJboulevard is the geographical counterpart of the IJpromenade. The IJboulevard also helps aquatic life to feed and shelter.

The IJboulevard was nominated for the BNA ‘Best Building of the Year’ 2024. It won the Schreuders Prize 2022 for Underground Construction. The IJboulevard film 2022 shows more of this fascinating project. The construction of the IJboulevard took place between 2019 and 2023. The bike parking and boulevard opened in February and April 2023.

The IJboulevard is an unofficial name. It refers to the boulevard-like area. It sits between Amsterdam Central Station and the IJ. The IJboulevard is part of the IJ banks.

The floor of the IJboulevard has natural stone tiles. Light gray tones match the water and air. There is no other building or planting allowed. This gives an unobstructed view. The entrances to the underground bike parking are at both ends. The material is a shade darker than the tiling.

So, as you stroll along the Amsterdam Centraal IJboulevard, remember what lies beneath. A testament to Amsterdam’s commitment to cycling, sustainability, and innovative urban design. A true transformation of function into public delight.
