Ontmoetingsplaats Sculpture

Sculpted in concrete, the Ontmoetingsplaats stands before us. It’s more than just art. It’s a meeting place, a testament to the balance between stillness and dynamism. The Ontmoetingsplaats was created by Shinkichi Tajiri in 1976. It’s located in Breedveld, at the corner of Het Breed 701 and Buikslotermeerplein. The stark white lines of the Ontmoetingsplaats represent tranquility. The staircase embodies dynamic energy. Like Yin and Yang, these opposing forces find harmony within Tajiri’s sculpture. The Ontmoetingsplaats isn’t just a standalone piece. It interacts with its surroundings. The sculpture’s clean lines mirror those of the surrounding high-rise flats, designed by Frans van Gool in the 1960s. This interplay between art and architecture elevates both, creating a unified aesthetic experience. Tajiri, originally from Japan, honed his artistic skills in Chicago and Paris. He studied under the renowned sculptor Ossip Zadkine. In 1956, he made the Netherlands his home. Tajiri’s experimental sculptures linked him to the CoBrA movement. This avant-garde group included artists like Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, and Asger Jorn. They sought to break free from traditional artistic conventions.
