This isn’t just any church it’s a place steeped in centuries of tradition. Its origins trace back to the Carmel mountain range in Israel a place nearly 600 meters high overlooking the sea near Haifa. The name itself ‘Karem El’ means ‘God’s vineyard’ a fitting name for a site so deeply associated with spiritual devotion.
The Carmelites a monastic order founded on Mount Carmel in the 12th century during the Crusades embraced a life of penance and prayer. They followed the example of the prophet Elijah who according to the Old Testament lived in a cave on that very mountain. Legend speaks of Elijah praying for rain during a severe drought. His servant saw a small cloud no bigger than a hand. This was interpreted as a prefiguration of the Virgin Mary the mother of the coming savior.
This association with Mary solidified the Carmelites devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Sadly the original monastery was destroyed by the Saracens in the 13th century. The order dispersed and only rebuilt in the 18th century. The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel celebrates a vision Mary granted to the Carmelite Simon Stock in Cambridge England in 1251. She gave him a scapular a religious garment promising special blessings to those who wore it.

The history of the original statue remains a mystery. Its present location is unknown.
