First mentioned in 1085, Abcoude has seen centuries of change. A bishop’s report referred to its residents as “habitatores de Abecenwalde.” Step back in time to 1672. Most of Abcoude was burned down by the French. Even after such devastation, Abcoude persevered. By 1820, it had 1,100 inhabitants.
The municipality of Abcoude came to life in 1941. It formed from Abcoude-Proosdij and Abcoude-Baambrugge. Abcoude-Proostdij covered the northern part of today’s Abcoude. Abcoude-Proostdij was once a manor owned by the chapter of St. Pieter in Utrecht.
Getting here is easy. Abcoude railway station offers direct services. You can travel to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Gouda, and Rotterdam.
Abcoude is known for its Fort bij Abcoude. This fort was built between 1884 and 1887. It formed part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort was mobilized during both World War I and World War II.
Once a year Abcoude hosted a Horse Market. Today, it is a five-day celebration known as De Abcouder Feestweek. It features music, food, and many activities.
