How long has Marken been drawing visitors? For over a century this picturesque village has captivated tourists. Marken a former island in the Zuiderzee now a peninsula in the IJsselmeer lake has charmed visitors for generations. Its unique wooden houses and traditional costumes are major attractions.

Originally a true island Marken faced frequent devastating floods. The resourceful inhabitants built their homes on artificial hills to protect themselves and their belongings from the water. Fishing became the village’s main industry leading to rapid population growth.

The completion of the Afsluitdijk in 1932 transformed the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer. This blocked access to the sea ending most fishing activities. Marken’s transformation continued in 1957 when a causeway connected it to the mainland. Marken ceased being an island but its unique character persevered.

The village retains its charm. Many of Marken’s wooden houses are national monuments. Some still stand on wooden poles a testament to the village’s history. The Paard van Marken lighthouse a national heritage site since 1970 is another key attraction. This distinctive lighthouse known as the “Horse of Marken” due to its unique shape replaced an earlier structure in 1839.

The Marker Museum offers a glimpse into the lives of Marken’s fishing families. You can see a traditional Marken house furnished as it was around 1920. The museum also showcases traditional clothing and artefacts illustrating the village’s rich history.

Though traditional costumes are rarely worn now except to please tourists they remain iconic symbols of Marken’s heritage. Marken’s appeal lies not only in its preserved buildings and culture but also in its resilience in the face of adversity. It’s a place where history and charm blend together creating a truly unforgettable experience. Marken is more than just a village. It’s a living testament to human ingenuity and adaptability a place that continues to thrive despite the changing tides.
