A towering steel pylon resembling a pilgrim’s staff stands guard. This is the Pelgrimskerk in Amsterdam. It’s more than just a building. It’s a story etched in concrete and time.

The Pelgrimskerk wasn’t always here. Built in 1964 it served the growing Buitenveldert neighborhood. Its modern design a stark contrast to Amsterdam’s older churches. A sleek zaalkerk a hall church with a polygonal floor plan. The architects Rothuizen and ‘t Hooft embraced modernist forms.

Initially a Gereformeerde Kerk a Reformed Church it later became a Samen op Weg church. This was a time of ecumenical cooperation. The Pelgrimskerk joined forces with a nearby Hervormde Pinksterkerk. They worshipped together. Now it’s part of the Protestantse Kerk Nederland PKN.

Inside a transformation occurred in 1999. The vast hall was divided. Smaller spaces were created. The original atmosphere was lost. Lower ceilings replaced the high ones. Loose chairs substituted pews. This created more space for movement. However the original grand feel vanished.

One section became “De Ontmoeting” The Meeting Place. It holds a poignant connection to a demolished church of the same name on the Arent Janszoon Ernststraat. The Pelgrimskerk held a special place in the community. On Saturdays the Seventh-day Adventists held services there. On Sundays a branch of the Church of Christ used it.

But time marches on. A final farewell concert was held on June 12 2022. The last service took place on June 19 2022. The Pelgrimskerk’s congregation now worships at the R.K. Goede Herderkerk. This is also in Buitenveldert.

The Pelgrimskerk itself met its end. It was demolished in March 2024. A new multi-functional complex will replace it. A smaller PKN church will be part of the new structure. There are even plans for a new Jewish Cultural Center with a synagogue. This would replace the current center. It’s a testament to the changing needs of the neighborhood. The Pelgrimskerk may be gone but its legacy continues. Its story lives on in the memories of the people. It lives in the lives it touched. Its legacy endures in the community it served.
