In the heart of Amsterdam, nestled amongst historic buildings, lies the Bijzondere Collecties of the University of Amsterdam. A treasure trove of cultural heritage, the Bijzondere Collecties, or Special Collections, holds a captivating story waiting to be unveiled. The Bijzondere Collecties houses an impressive collection. It boasts one of Europe’s three largest heritage libraries. Its holdings include books, manuscripts, and even Willem and Joan Blaeu’s original maps. Until 2007, these invaluable pieces were scattered across Amsterdam. The decision to unite them under one roof led to the creation of the Bijzondere Collecties library at Oude Turfmarkt. The building itself is a testament to architectural brilliance and historical preservation. Designed by the 17th-century architect Philips Vingboons, the Bijzondere Collecties complex incorporates three of his original houses, accompanying back houses, and the former Saint Bernard Asylum. This 19th-century asylum, with its distinctive slanted wing in the garden, adds another layer of intrigue to the site. Each building within the complex is recognized as a national monument. Their waterfront facades contribute to the beauty of Amsterdam’s iconic canal belt. The complex has undergone significant transformations, including restoration, renovation, and expansion. A key challenge was improving accessibility. The original gateway to the Binnengasthuis, the oldest part of the complex, had been closed over time. The architects reopened this historic Gasthuispoort, creating a spectacular new entrance that places visitors directly in the heart of the complex. A striking feature of the Bijzondere Collecties is the light court, a modern addition that seamlessly blends with the historic structures. This light-filled atrium cuts through the complex, opening it up and providing a welcoming space for visitors. Created by covering the courtyard between the Vingboons houses with a glass roof, the light court is crisscrossed by glass and steel walkways, creating a dynamic and airy atmosphere. The Bijzondere Collecties offers a unique experience for visitors, blending historical charm with modern accessibility. The various buildings have been thoughtfully adapted to their function. While preserving their individual character, they work together harmoniously to house and display the collection. The Saint Bernard Asylum, initially unsuitable for book preservation, underwent a complete internal transformation. While the facade was preserved, a new structure was built inside, providing a secure and organized space for the library’s holdings. The Vingboons houses, on the other hand, required minimal intervention. Their restoration highlights the elegant atmosphere of 17th-century Amsterdam. Original oak ceilings were ingeniously incorporated into the new design, serving as formwork for the concrete floors that support the weighty bookshelves. The Bijzondere Collecties is more than just a library. It is a living testament to history, architecture, and the enduring power of knowledge. A visit to this extraordinary place offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the rich cultural heritage of the University of Amsterdam.
