A hidden history unfolds at Valeriusplein. This unassuming square in Amsterdam Zuid holds secrets within its meticulously landscaped grounds. Valeriusplein isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a place where history whispers through the architecture and the very stones beneath your feet.

Named after Adriaen Valerius a Dutch songwriter and notary Valeriusplein boasts a rich past. Its story began in 1910 with the construction of the Valeriuskliniek a psychiatric hospital. This imposing building stood for over a century a silent witness to countless lives. However the grand old building was demolished in 2017 to make way for the luxurious Valerius apartment complex. This transition is a stark reminder of how a city constantly evolves.

Yet the spirit of the old Valeriuskliniek lives on. Gerrit Jan Rutgers a prominent figure in the area’s architectural landscape played a significant role. He oversaw the extension of the Valeriuskliniek in 1919-1920. He also designed the staff housing at Valeriusplein 42-44. These buildings are now a testament to the enduring legacy of the past.

Valeriusplein also showcases the Amsterdams Lyceum. Built in 1920 the school building and its accompanying service buildings are listed as national monuments. The building stands as a symbol of education and the pursuit of knowledge. Standing proudly on the southern side of the square. Next to it sits the former Physiological Laboratory of the Vrije Universiteit. Another striking national monument dating back to 1916.

The central feature of Valeriusplein is a long rectangular garden. Here two Art Nouveau-style public toilets designed by Jan de Meyer in 1922 stand. These small buildings along with the garden’s fence and a bench are also national monuments. They were all protected in 1996. A concrete sculpture Verticale compositie by Henk Zweerus was added in 1960. It stands in the middle of the garden. Inspired by Belgian artist Georges Vantongerloo it’s a fascinating piece of public art.

Nearby you will see the Westhove apartment complex. Designed by architect F A Warners between 1920 and 1923. It’s another national monument. Its elegant design reflects the architectural style of the time. Just south of the Valeriusplein is Valeriusterras. An elevated street accessible by stairs. Another testament to the architectural richness of the area.

So next time you’re in Amsterdam-Zuid take a moment to explore Valeriusplein. Marvel at its architectural gems. Appreciate its transformation from a psychiatric hospital to a modern residential complex. Let its history enrich your understanding of Amsterdam’s multifaceted story. It’s more than just a square.
