Ever wondered how a whole province could be conjured from the sea? That’s the story of Flevopolder. Today, we find ourselves on what is, essentially, the world’s largest artificial island.

Flevopolder is more than just land. It is a testament to Dutch ingenuity and their relentless battle against the water. Imagine this entire area submerged. Now, picture the sheer determination it took to reclaim it.

Back in 1916, a major flood triggered a national decision. The Zuiderzee, a large inland sea, needed to be tamed. The ambitious Zuiderzee Works began. By 1932, the Afsluitdijk was completed. This massive dam separated the Zuiderzee from the North Sea, creating the IJsselmeer.

But that was just the beginning. The Flevopolder itself was reclaimed in stages. The northeastern part was completed in 1957. The southwestern part emerged in 1968. A crucial design element ensured the coastal towns retained their waterfronts. A narrow body of water, kept three meters below sea level, stabilized the water table.

The municipalities in the area decided to unite. In 1986, Flevoland became the twelfth and newest province of the Netherlands. Flevopolder played a vital role in this transformation.

Eastern and Southern Flevoland form a unique entity. Unlike the Noordoostpolder, they are separated from the mainland by channels. These are the Veluwemeer and Gooimeer. This makes them, together, the world’s largest artificial island.

The two polders share a hydrological infrastructure. The Knardijk, a dividing dike, stands ready to protect one polder if the other floods. Drainage canals and pumping stations work tirelessly to maintain the water level.

Lelystad, named after Cornelis Lely, emerged as a major city. Dronten, along with Swifterbant and Biddinghuizen, formed the municipality of Dronten. Almere was designed to alleviate housing shortages. It was divided into Almere-Haven, Almere-Stad, and Almere-Buiten.

The Oostvaardersplassen is a remarkable area. Initially planned for industrial use, it transformed into a nature park. Its ecological significance even led to the diversion of a railway line.

Agriculture dominates the center of the Flevopolder. Extensive forests define the southeastern part. Zeewolde, a conventional town, serves as the local center.

Flevoland’s economy thrives on various sectors. Tulip cultivation is a major contributor. The province is also a hub for logistics and engineering. Urk, a former island, is a vital distribution center for fish.

Flevopolder stands as a symbol of Dutch innovation. It showcases their ability to reshape the landscape. It’s a place where land was literally created. It’s a testament to human endeavor.
