A hidden gem awaits you. Welcome to Amsterdam’s Eendrachtspark.

This isn’t just any park. Eendrachtspark boasts a rich history. It was planned in the 1960s. The design followed Cor van Eesteren and Ko Mulder’s General Extension Plan. However it lies just outside the plan’s boundaries. Named in 1959 the park’s name honors De Eendracht a peat bog west of Geuzenveld. Landscape architect Evert Mos designed its layout.

Eendrachtspark sits nestled between the garden cities of Slotermeer and Geuzenveld. The Ruys de Beerenbrouckstraat forms its northern border. The Albardagracht defines its southern edge. An irrigation ditch marks its eastern boundary. The striking Parkrandgebouw designed by MVRDV stands on its western side. This building stands as a modern testament to architectural innovation.

A peninsula once existed on the park’s south side. It housed several schools earning it the moniker Scholeneiland or School Island. Can you imagine the hustle and bustle of those school days? Children’s laughter echoing through the trees.

The park underwent significant renovations starting in 2005. These improvements enhanced its beauty and functionality. These works improved accessibility and created a more inviting atmosphere. The transformation revitalized this green space. It made it an even more enjoyable place for residents and visitors alike.

Eendrachtspark’s northern section features a playground. A central feature is a wading pool. Aldo van Eyck designed this unique circular wading pool. It includes stepping stones creating a counterclockwise circular fragment. Rubber covers protect these stepping stones from falling children. Two of Van Eyck’s igloos remain after the playground’s renovation. Modern play equipment complements these historic structures. The blend of old and new creates a truly unique space.

Two pedestrian bridges were added around 2005. Brug 2370 is a hook-shaped bridge. It supports the footpath between two points on the shore of a small lake. Brug 2371 is a straight bridge. It crosses the lake’s entrance and exit. This exit leads to an irrigation ditch part of Geuzenveld’s layout.

Eendrachtspark also houses several works of art. The Vogelgod by Leo Braat from 1971 stands proudly. The Love Sphinx by Carel Kneulman from 1974 adds a touch of whimsy. Nel van Lith’s Beest from 1974 completes this unique outdoor art gallery.

So take a moment to appreciate Eendrachtspark. It’s more than just a park. It’s a living testament to Amsterdam’s history. Its design reflects the city’s dedication to community and green spaces. It’s a place where history architecture and nature intertwine. Enjoy this hidden gem in the heart of Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
