Peeking out from Amsterdam’s southern edge is Buitenveldert. This neighborhood offers a unique blend of residential charm and modern development. Buitenveldert isn’t just another Amsterdam neighborhood. It’s a place with a distinct identity.
Once part of the rural Amstelland region, Buitenveldert was annexed by Amsterdam in 1921. This marked the beginning of its transformation. The city saw potential in the Buitenveldert polder.
Fast forward to 1935. The Algemene Uitbreidingsplan emerged. It designated Buitenveldert as a new suburb. Uniquely, it was the only one on the city’s south side. Most others sprung up to the west.
Construction began in 1958. The vision was a garden city. A year later, the first residents moved in. Buitenveldert was taking shape.
In 1987, Buitenveldert achieved borough status. Later, it merged with Rivierenbuurt. Together, they formed Zuideramstel. In 2010, another merger occurred. Buitenveldert became part of Amsterdam-Zuid.
Buitenveldert is known as the modern Jewish quarter of Amsterdam. Synagogues, Jewish schools, and kosher shops dot the area. This gives Buitenveldert a unique cultural flavor.
The Zuidas business district significantly reshaped Buitenveldert’s northern part. Meanwhile, the southern part remained largely residential. This contrast defines much of Buitenveldert’s character.
Gelderlandplein is a highlight of the residential area. This shopping center offers a variety of shops. Clothing stores, jewelers, and restaurants are all present. It’s a local hub for shopping and dining. Unlike other major shopping centers in Amsterdam like Magna Plaza, Gelderlandplein isn’t located in the city center. It’s nestled within the Buitenveldert neighborhood.
Buitenveldert offers green spaces. The Amsterdamse Bos is nearby. This sprawling park is perfect for outdoor activities. Cycling, walking, and picnicking are popular here.
Buitenveldert is easily accessible. Excellent tram and bus connections link it to the rest of Amsterdam. Exploring the city from here is convenient.
