Hidden within Amsterdam’s serene Begijnhof courtyard lies the English Reformed Church. This unassuming sanctuary holds centuries of stories. The English Reformed Church began its life in 1607. The city council granted English speakers a place of worship. This “disused” building within the Begijnhof became their spiritual home. The English Reformed Church has a fascinating connection to Scotland. The ministers have historically come from Scotland. The church is part of the Church of Scotland’s Presbytery of Europe. This connection has shaped the church’s identity and traditions. Inside the church, you’ll find traces of its rich past. The gravestones on the floor whisper tales of those who came before. Among them lies the baroque composer Locatelli. Panels on the walls commemorate past parishioners and significant events. A brass lectern, donated by King William and Queen Mary Stuart in 1689, stands proudly. A stained-glass window honors the Pilgrim Fathers. Many of them resided in Amsterdam before their journey to America. The church’s history is intertwined with the Begijnhof itself. The Begijnhof, unlike typical courtyards, functioned more like a convent for beguines. These women took vows of chastity but could leave to marry. During the Reformation in 1578, while other religious establishments were closed, the Begijnhof remained. Its hidden church allowed the beguines to continue their worship. This tolerance reflected Amsterdam’s principle of overlooking practices that didn’t disrupt public order. The English Reformed Church building dates back to the late 14th century. A chapel existed on the north side of the courtyard in 1397. Construction of a new church began in 1417. Fires in 1421 and 1452 caused significant damage. The current structure was completed in 1492. The tower might be even older, potentially dating back to 1417. The church expanded with a southern aisle in the 1670s. Restorations occurred in 1912 and 1976. The English Reformed Church continues to serve a diverse, international congregation. It stands as a testament to its enduring history within the tranquil heart of Amsterdam.
