Hidden amongst the dunes at the end of Slingerduinlaan lies Begraafplaats Duinhof. It’s a place of quiet contemplation, a serene sanctuary nestled between IJmuiden and Driehuis. Designed by the renowned architect Willem Marinus Dudok, Begraafplaats Duinhof opened its gates in 1963. The striking contrast between Dudok’s stark, geometric designs and the untamed beauty of the surrounding dunes is immediately apparent. Dudok believed that nature could offer solace and reconciliation, a philosophy clearly reflected in the design of the cemetery. The pergola, the grand canopy, and the starkly shaped aula stand as testaments to his vision. Large windows allow natural light to flood the aula, offering a tranquil view of the surrounding natural landscape. Begraafplaats Duinhof isn’t just a final resting place. It’s a living tapestry of stories, woven from the lives of those interred here. Within its grounds lies a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of war: the oorlogsbegraafplaats, or war cemetery. Thirteen graves hold the remains of those who perished during World War II. Facing these graves stands a powerful sculpture, “De Vallende Man” (The Falling Man), created by Rotterdam artist Cor van Kralingen. The bronze figure of a man falling backward, as if struck by a bullet, serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict. The monument, along with the war cemetery, commemorates all victims of World War II. A memorial stone also stands in remembrance of fourteen young men from Velsen who lost their lives in the former Dutch East Indies between 1945 and 1950. Begraafplaats Duinhof also holds the remains of Ab Homburg, a decorated pilot with the 322 Dutch Squadron RAF, twice awarded the Bronzen Leeuw. Originally buried under the name Harvey in Delden, his remains were later transferred to Duinhof. The cemetery offers a variety of burial options, including natural burials. A beautiful outdoor aula, an urn garden, a scattering field, and a columbarium provide further choices for commemorating loved ones.
