Two imposing heads, frozen in time. This is Anker II, a striking sculpture gracing Rokin, a revitalized area between Muntplein and Dam Square in Amsterdam. Anker II is a relatively new addition to Amsterdam’s artistic landscape, installed on July 31, 2017. Its courtyard offers a tranquil escape, despite being situated on a busy tram route. The sculpture, crafted by Dutch/Belgian artist Mark Manders, stands as his first public project in Europe. Anker II is more than just two heads. It’s a dynamic fountain. Water flows from the tops of the heads, cascading down their shoulders and across the marble pedestal. On a warm summer day, this creates a refreshing mist. The contrast between the rough bronze heads and the smooth marble plinth is a testament to Manders’ artistic vision. The heads face opposite directions, perhaps symbolizing different perspectives or the duality of human nature. This mesmerizing artwork invites contemplation and adds a unique dimension to Amsterdam’s vibrant art scene.
