Beaches in Amsterdam? Really? Surprisingly yes, right here at Veerplas. This isn’t your typical Dutch landscape of canals and tulips. Veerplas is an artificial lake with a sandy beach.

Dug in 1994, Veerplas was created for recreation. It is part of the larger Spaarnwoude recreational area. Veerplas measures 450 by 400 metres. It provides a refreshing escape.

Notice the constructed wetland along the southern shore. This area is not just for looks. It actively purifies the water of Veerplas. You might spot various waterfowl here. Greylag geese, wigeons, and common goldeneyes frequent the area. Especially during winter, they gather along the swampy eastern shore.

Anglers might be interested to know that carps were released into Veerplas. The local angling club stocked the lake.

Now, cast your eyes towards the western shore. A 300-metre sandy beach invites visitors. There is a shallow area cordoned off for safe swimming. It is perfect for inexperienced bathers. Grassy sunbathing areas surround the lake. Public toilets are available here, as well as a children’s adventure playground.

Veerplas is easily accessible. It is a short walk from Haarlem Spaarnwoude railway station. The A200 and A9 motorways are also nearby. This convenient location makes Veerplas a popular event venue. For example, Circus Herman Renz pitched its tent here in 2006. It was quite a spectacle beside the Veerplas.

The municipality of Haarlem has big plans for Veerplas. The Spoorzone masterplan includes constructing 260 houses. These homes will line the western shore of Veerplas. A recreation centre is also planned. It will offer sports activities, nature education and catering.

Veerplas is also known locally as the PTT-meertje. That’s a fun fact to share.

In 2009, Veerplas faced a challenge with blue algae. The Recreatieschap Spaarnwoude tested hydrogen peroxide to combat it. The test was successful. A swimming ban was lifted after only five days.

Strandtent Veerkwartier was established in 2015. It was made possible through crowdfunding. This creative space aimed to be self-sufficient.

Veerplas has hosted several events over the years. Circus Herman Renz performed their Christmas circus here from 2006 to 2016. The dance festival Edit took place from 2012 to 2017. In 2016, Patronaat organised the Zomerfruitfestival. The Veerplas Festival made its debut in 2017.

Today, Veerplas continues to evolve. It is more than just a lake. It is a community hub. It is a place for recreation, relaxation, and celebration. A place where music, food, and fun come together. Remember this unique spot, a testament to Haarlem’s innovative spirit. Veerplas offers something for everyone. Whether you seek relaxation or adventure.
