Ever wondered about Amsterdam’s hidden history? Step into Brouwerskolkpark. This isn’t just any park. Brouwerskolkpark in Overveen boasts a rich past. For centuries its waters nourished Haarlem’s breweries. The pristine duinwater flowed via the Brouwersvaart. It quenched the thirst of Haarlem’s brewers. Textile bleachers in Overveen also relied on this water. Imagine the bustling activity. Think of the carts carrying the precious liquid. Picture workers carefully transporting the water to their businesses. This water was so pure it was even considered for Amsterdam itself. Around 1846 a plan emerged. It proposed piping water from the Brouwerskolk directly to Amsterdam. The plan involved hollowed-out tree trunks. An ambitious project! But ultimately another source was chosen. That source is now known as the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. The Brouwerskolkpark wasn’t always a park. The land initially belonged to Belvedere estate. The western part was sold to the municipality in 1928. Initially it was intended to be a villa park. But thanks to the protests of landscape architect Zocher Jr it became Brouwerskolkpark. This section embraces a beautiful dune landscape. It includes the ‘Kopje van Overveen’ viewpoint. In 1960 the eastern section joined the park. This was acquired from Belvedere. An agreement ensured the wooded hills would remain until at least 2029. Today Brouwerskolkpark offers a tranquil escape. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. The park is home to a restaurant ‘t Brouwerskolkje. This is on the side bordering Belvedere and Vaart en duin. The park also has three tunnels under the road. These tunnels help the annual toad migration. So next time you’re in Overveen take a moment to explore Brouwerskolkpark. Discover its unique history and enjoy its peaceful beauty. This small park truly reveals a big story. It reveals a story of resourceful ingenuity and environmental awareness. It’s a fascinating piece of Amsterdam’s hidden past.
