Gazing across Zuidoostbeemster, can you envision its humble beginnings? Zuidoostbeemster wasn’t always the bustling village we see today. In the mid-1800s, it began as a small settlement. Retired cattle farmers, drawn by the lively Purmerend livestock market, sought a nearby residence. They built smaller versions of the grand farmhouses typical of the region, establishing Zuidoostbeemster as a suburb of Purmerend. Zuidoostbeemster continued to evolve between 1918 and 1940. New homes for gardeners and retirees sprang up along Purmerenderweg and Zuiderweg. New streets like Jacobus Boumanlaan and Wouter Sluislaan appeared on the map. The municipality of Beemster, seeing Purmerend eyeing Zuidoostbeemster for expansion, strategically purchased land in 1920. This clever move prevented large-scale development by Purmerend, while still allowing for controlled growth within Zuidoostbeemster. By 2005, Zuidoostbeemster and the surrounding area boasted a population of around 2,050. Remarkably, by 2020, this number had swelled to 3,310, a testament to the village’s continued appeal. Today, Zuidoostbeemster is a blend of old and new. Modern housing projects like “De Nieuwe Tuinderij” attract young families from nearby cities, creating a vibrant community amidst the historical backdrop of this charming Dutch village.
