Did you bring cash today? You might need it as we step into Oudemanhuispoort. This isn’t just any passageway. It’s a portal to Amsterdam’s past. Oudemanhuispoort or Old Man’s House Passage is more than just a shortcut. It’s a covered walkway brimming with history and second-hand treasures.
Once upon a time in the 17th century, this passage led to the Oud Man Huis. That means the Old Man’s House. It was an almshouse for the elderly. Today, the building is part of the University of Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Research Institute for Legal Studies now calls it home.
But that’s not all. Oudemanhuispoort has worn many hats. It has been a convent, a hospital for cholera patients, and even an arts academy. For a time, it housed masterpieces by Dutch masters like Rembrandt and Vermeer. These paintings later formed the foundation of the Rijksmuseum’s collection.
Step through the gates. They date back to 1601. The current versions were installed in 1786. Notice the spectacle chiseled into the pediment on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal side. It’s a nod to the passage’s history as an old age home.
Since 1886, Oudemanhuispoort has been a book market. Stalls line both sides of the passage. They are filled with second-hand books, prints, and sheet music. The vendors are often older men. They are willing to share their knowledge.
Legend has it that Vincent van Gogh frequented this passage. He sought inspiration among the Japanese prints sold here. Some say these prints influenced his art. He even paid with portraits when short on money.
Today, you can browse the stalls. You might find historic maps, engravings, and vintage posters. Most books are in Dutch. But you can find some English and other foreign language treasures. Remember, it’s cash only. The prices vary. Some books cost only a few euros. Others are over a hundred.
Take a break in the hidden courtyard. It’s part of the University of Amsterdam. Enjoy your new book purchases. Oudemanhuispoort is a unique blend of history, culture, and commerce. It’s a must-see for any visitor to Amsterdam.
