Feel the wind. It whispers tales of giants. Giants of the sky. This is the Official Spottersplace Schiphol Polderbaan. Right here you witness aviation history unfold.

The Polderbaan runway is Schiphol’s longest. It stretches 3800 meters. This colossal runway opened in 2003. Locals named it the Polderbaan. It’s strategically located to minimize noise over densely populated areas. Yet its remote position means a longer taxi time to the terminals. About fifteen minutes in some cases.

Imagine. In 1916 a farmer named Knibbe sold his land. This small plot became Schiphol Airport. It started as a military airfield. Soon it handled cargo post and passengers. By 1917 it was one of Europe’s largest airports. The early years were muddy. Aircraft were heavier. The soggy airfield earned nicknames like Schiphol Swamp.

The Second World War drastically altered Schiphol’s trajectory. German forces occupied it renaming it Fliegerhorst 561. It became a heavily defended base. Allied bombers attacked it in 1943 causing significant damage. The Germans destroyed the remaining runways in 1944. Yet Schiphol rose from the ashes. The first post-war plane landed in 1945.

Schiphol’s growth continued. In 1967 a new terminal opened. This was only the beginning. The arrival of jet engines necessitated runway upgrades. The airport expanded adding more runways and piers. It became a major European hub. It became the Mainport a significant driver of the Dutch economy.

Today you are at the Official Spottersplace Schiphol Polderbaan. Here you witness the culmination of Schiphol’s incredible journey. You see the culmination of courage innovation and resilience. The Polderbaan. A testament to aviation’s ongoing evolution. A place where history soars. Enjoy the spectacle.
