The gentle lapping of the Danube against the quay. That’s the Hafen Passau. A whisper of history. A symphony of commerce.

Right here before you lies one of Bavaria’s six significant ports. The Hafen Passau. More than just a place for ships to dock. It’s a living testament to trade and innovation. For centuries the advantageous location of Passau has been exploited for commerce along the Inn and Danube rivers. The first ships landed at the Passauer Lande in what is now the historic old town.

But the ever-increasing volume of goods demanded more. In 1900 they decided to build a winter harbour. A refuge harbour they called it. Imagine the scale of the project. They connected Racklau Island to the right bank of the Danube with a 1068 metre-long dam. A feat of engineering for its time. A 667-metre quay wall was constructed. Rail and road access transformed this island into a fully functional port.

In 1902 the easternmost German inland port opened its gates. Passau-Racklau. A pivotal moment. Yet it was the Kachlet weir in 1922 that brought about a significant leap forward. The Danube between Auerbach and Hofkirchen was straightened. Ships could navigate 120 kilometres further west. The port of Passau thrived. The impact on trade was profound.

The Hafen Passau continued to grow and adapt. Roll-on roll-off facilities were added in the 1980s in Schalding. This expanded the capabilities of the port even further. Today regular transport of trailers by RoRo catamaran to Vidin in Bulgaria is common.

The Hafen Passau boasts a network of 3 kilometres of its own rail lines. Cranes can lift up to 120 tonnes. Eleven companies call this port home providing jobs for 121 people. Its trimodal connections between road rail and water make it efficient and effective.

But the Hafen Passau is more than just steel and concrete. It’s a vibrant hub. It’s the link between countries. It’s the story of ingenuity and enterprise unfolding on the banks of the Danube. It’s the heart of Passau’s economic strength. A sight to behold. And to remember.
