Might you guess that this building, now apartments, was once a hub of groundbreaking physics? This is the former Zeemanlaboratorium. It stands on Plantage Muidergracht. The Zeeman Lab played a crucial role in scientific history.
The Zeemanlaboratorium owes its existence to Pieter Zeeman. He was a professor at the University of Amsterdam. Zeeman tirelessly campaigned for a new lab. He needed more space and better facilities. The original physics lab was at Plantage Muidergracht 6. Zeeman’s work required precise magnetic and optical experiments.
Abel Antoon Kok designed the Zeemanlaboratorium. He worked for the Amsterdam Department of Public Works. Construction finished in 1922. The lab opened in 1923. It featured vibration-free tables. The largest weighed 250,000 kg. This table supported a grating. The American physicist H.A. Rowland engraved it specifically for Zeeman.
In 1896, Pieter Zeeman discovered the Zeeman effect. This showed how spectral lines split in a magnetic field. This discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1902. He shared the prize with Hendrik Lorentz. Lorentz provided the theoretical explanation.
Look above the entrance. You will see “ZEEMAN LABORATORIUM”. Below it, a window displays a stylized light wave. A prism refracts a beam of light. These decorative elements symbolize the work done here.
In 1940, the institute officially became the Zeeman Laboratory. This honored Pieter Zeeman’s contributions. He continued his research here until his death in 1943. The lab remained a center for physics research for many years.
Take a walk to the west side of the building. On the wall facing the J.W. van Overloopplantsoen, you will find a fountain. John Rädecker created this fountain.
By 2007, the University of Amsterdam consolidated its science departments. They moved to the Science Park. The university sold the Zeeman Laboratory. It was redeveloped into apartments. Fortunately, the building has been a national monument since 2001. This status protects its historical features.
In 2022, the European Physical Society recognized the Zeeman Lab. It became an EPS Historic Site. This acknowledges the site’s extraordinary contribution to physics. The Zeeman Lab joins other significant sites like the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory in Leiden.
