Do you know why Brug 331 is so special? It’s not just a bridge. It’s a bridge with a story.

Brug 331 gracefully spans a koelwaterkanaal in Amsterdam-West. Koelwaterkanaal means cooling water canal. Just ten meters to the north is Brug 391. Twenty meters further along the Nieuwe Hemweg are Brug 330 and Brug 390.

This location has seen a bridge since 1951. That bridge was designed by Piet Kramer of the Dienst der Publieke Werken. Kramer often used the Amsterdamse School style. However, Brug 331 only hinted at this style. You could see it in the center pier. Typical Kramer touches were the wrought-iron railings and stone abutments. These connected the bridge to the land. The bridge deck rested on a steel plate. It was supported by wood and concrete pilings.

But time marches on. By 2013, the steel bridge needed to be replaced. The new concrete bridge meets modern standards. The original railings were reinstalled on the new Brug 331.

Brug 331 isn’t alone. Nearby, Brug 391 carries trains. This concrete bridge also dates back to 1951. Its central pier creates two passages. However, the low clearance makes boat travel difficult. Brug 391 is built to carry heavy trains. Its spans start within the embankments. The bridge is four meters wide. It carries a double track and a switching yard.

So, as you cross Brug 331, remember its history. Think of Piet Kramer’s design. Consider the work that went into both the old and new bridges. Look at the elegant railings. Notice the nearby Brug 391 carrying trains. These bridges are vital parts of Amsterdam’s infrastructure. They connect people and places. They also tell a story of design and progress.
