Hidden amongst the echoes of history, the Verhalenpaal VERZET Sculpture stands as a silent testament to a time of turmoil and resilience. Here, at Max Euweplein in Amsterdam, two glass tears weep for the struggles endured during World War II. The Verhalenpaal VERZET Sculpture isn’t just an artwork. It’s a raw, emotional response to the suffering inflicted by the war, crafted by artist Bernard Heesen. These tears, encased in glass and mounted on a blue plate, are a poignant reminder of the pain and loss experienced within the walls of the former Huis van Bewaring. This building, once a prison, was transformed into a chilling instrument of oppression by the SD and Gestapo during the Nazi occupation. The Verhalenpaal VERZET Sculpture marks this site, a place where countless political prisoners, including those persecuted for their religion, sexual orientation, or ancestry, were held captive. For many, this was merely the first stop on a terrifying journey to concentration camps, German prisons, or execution sites. The inscription beneath the Verhalenpaal VERZET Sculpture tells of two daring raids in 1944, attempts to liberate those imprisoned within these walls. One, led by the courageous Gerrit Jan van der Veen. The other, by the equally brave Johannes Post. These acts of defiance, though ultimately unsuccessful, embody the unwavering spirit of resistance that burned within the hearts of the Dutch people. Unveiled in 1993 by Mayor Ed van Thijn, the Verhalenpaal VERZET Sculpture continues to resonate with the community, adopted by the Amsterdams Lyceum as a symbol of remembrance. The school, like so many others, suffered devastating losses during the occupation, its students and staff victims of both retaliation and the horrors of the Holocaust. The Verhalenpaal VERZET Sculpture serves as a timeless memorial to their sacrifice. Here, in the heart of Amsterdam, these glass tears shimmer. They catch the light, reflecting not only the sorrow of the past, but also the enduring strength and resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. The Verhalenpaal VERZET Sculpture calls upon us to remember, to learn, and to never forget the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom.
