Pause here a moment. Do you see how Villa Aemstelle blends Amsterdamse School and Bauhaus styles? It is quite unique.

Villa Aemstelle stands as one of Amstelveen’s oldest buildings. It was constructed in 1929. Architect N.F. Coorengel designed it.

Let’s talk about Villa Aemstelle’s past. From 1963 to the mid-1990s, it was the Aemstelle municipal exhibition center. In 1968, the exhibition center celebrated its fifth anniversary. Cees Bantzinger created a drawing for the anniversary.

Before becoming an exhibition center, the family Gerard van Royen lived here. Gerard van Royen, his wife Bernardina and their ten children lived here before the municipality bought it from them in 1963.

In 1983, Aemstelle celebrated its 20th anniversary. Aemstelle had earned its place among Amsterdam’s museums and galleries. Many famous artists displayed their work here. Aemstelle also showcased young artists. The exhibition center also focused on photography and current events.

The Oudheidkamer Amstelveen also resided here. It was on the first floor. Its highlight was the growing Amstel porcelain collection.

After the exhibition center moved, Villa Aemstelle stood empty for a while. Van Lanschot Bankiers NV renovated it and used it as an office from 2002 to 2013.

In 2008, Villa Aemstelle became a municipal monument.

Later, Schagen en Helder renovated the building. The company gave it back its name: Villa Aemstelle. It is home to accountancy and business advice firms.

Today, Villa Aemstelle houses multiple companies. Its history is rich. From family home to exhibition space and bank office, it has seen many changes. Villa Aemstelle remains a landmark in Amstelveen. Its blend of architectural styles makes it special.

Take one last look at Villa Aemstelle. Think about its past and its importance to Amstelveen. It is a building with stories to tell.
