The soaring sounds of hymns once filled this very space. This is the Apostolisch Genootschap a place of profound spiritual and social significance in Amsterdam. Founded in 1951 it emerged from a schism within the New Apostolic Church. A significant portion of the congregation chose to follow Lambertus Slok viewed by many as a “returned Christ”.
The Apostolisch Genootschap wasn’t just a religious community. It built strong bonds among its approximately 14000 members and sympathizers. It also had a far-reaching network with 69 locations in the Netherlands and 4 abroad. The community wasn’t always about strict dogma. In fact it’s undergone a fascinating evolution.
Initially the Apostolisch Genootschap operated with a highly centralized authority. The apostle held supreme spiritual power. However over time significant reforms reshaped the organization. The focus shifted towards a more inclusive and participatory approach. The role of the apostle was gradually redefined. In 2022 the title “apostle” was even abandoned in favor of “first responsible church leader”. This reflects the movement towards religious humanism.
The Apostolisch Genootschap’s belief system also changed dramatically. The emphasis moved away from traditional interpretations of the Bible. The concept of God evolved into a more nuanced understanding a creative force or a loving power between individuals. They even established a chair of Religious Humanism and Compassion at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This reflects the community’s commitment to fostering a compassionate world.
Even the acoustics of the building tell a story. The Apostolisch Genootschap faced challenges in balancing the reverberation inherent in church architecture with clear speech intelligibility. The goal was to ensure everyone could clearly understand the message. Acoustic panels were installed to solve the problem. The Apostolisch Genootschap’s journey underscores its resilience and adaptability. It shows that faith can evolve and remain a powerful force. This unique building stands as a testament to that journey.
