The Thamerkerk’s tale begins with water. Imagine Thamen, a lively village. In the 17th century, frequent floods forced residents to seek higher ground. They moved to a bend in the Amstel River. There, in 1663, they built a church. That was the original Thamerkerk. A modest church stood as a beacon of hope.
Life around the church was vibrant. Jaagpaarden pulled boats along the river. Carts rumbled along the dike. Schippers navigated the waterways. Turfstekers, vissers, and boeren populated the area. German seasonal workers added to the bustle in the summer. Despite the constant rhythm of daily life, an underprefect once remarked on the villagers’ stiff demeanor.
That first Thamerkerk didn’t last. The facade began to buckle. A storm threatened to topple it. So, in 1834, they laid the first stone for a new church right next door. A year later, the new Thamerkerk opened its doors. L. van Heusden designed it in the Biedermeier style. The new church overlooked the Amstel. Underneath the churchyard lie the remains of the old Thamerkerk.
This Thamerkerk has seen changes. A balcony was added. The organ was moved. Speaking of the organ, it predates this building. It graced the previous church. The Hemonyklok is even older. It was cast in 1659 for Amsterdam’s Nieuwe Kerk. It only arrived here in 1852. The Germans seized it during the war. The ship carrying the Hemonyklok sank in the IJsselmeer. After the war, they recovered it. It rings out over Uithoorn again.
Since 1973, the Thamerkerk has been a Rijksmonument. Today, it is more than just a church. It’s a cultural center. The Stichting Beheer Historisch Erfgoed Uithoorn manages it. They aim to preserve it for the community. It serves as a multifunctional space for various activities. Though briefly sold in 2019, its purpose remains.
