Sculpted in stone, the Rustende atleet exudes a quiet strength. The Rustende atleet sits here on the Minervaplein, at the intersection of Minervalaan and Stadionweg. This sculpture has been a silent observer of Amsterdam life since 1951. Originally commissioned in 1940, World War II delayed its creation. Sculptor Jan Havermans finally completed the Rustende atleet in 1950. The sculpture made a brief detour to Antwerp for an international exhibition before arriving in Amsterdam. It was temporarily displayed at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam during a Belgian Sculpture exhibition in 1951. Finally, it found its permanent home here on its specially designed pedestal. The pose of the Rustende atleet is reminiscent of Rodin’s “The Thinker”. This resemblance adds another layer to its artistic significance. Interestingly, Havermans also created another sculpture, “De rustende tuinder” (The Resting Gardener), located in the Jan van Galenplantsoen. The Rustende atleet is more than just a statue. It’s a testament to resilience, a symbol of peace after war, and a beautiful piece of art gracing Amsterdam’s landscape.
