Reflecting on the atrocities. That’s what the Gedenksteen Executies Zuid-Kennemerland War Memorial invites us to do. This monument stands as a solemn reminder of the dark days of World War II. It commemorates the 422 resistance fighters who were executed here.

The Gedenksteen Executies Zuid-Kennemerland War Memorial marks a place of immense sorrow. These were people who bravely stood against the Nazi occupation. They paid the ultimate price for freedom.

Just after the liberation in 1945 mass graves were discovered in the dunes. These graves held the remains of those executed. Among them was Hannie Schaft, the only woman. There were also entire groups like the resistance team behind the Amsterdam population registry attack. The board of the Jewish community of Haarlem was also found here.

Identification of the bodies was a difficult task. Dr H Wamsteker, a surgeon and former resistance member led the effort. Only two individuals remain unidentified.

In May 1949 eight memorial stones were unveiled. These marked the locations of the mass graves. Each stone bears an inscription. It indicates the number of murdered resistance members found there. In the spring of 2000 the original stones were replaced with red granite.

The text on the Gedenksteen Executies Zuid-Kennemerland War Memorial reads: “Hier Lagen [number] Vermoorde Verzetslieden Gevonden Mei 1945.” This translates to: “Here lay [number] murdered resistance members found May 1945.”

Originally the stones were made of red sandstone. Toon Lavertu and his father carved them in the Kennemerduinen. This happened at the excavation sites. Lavertu described it as a deeply affecting task. He said the ground still seemed to breathe murder.

The Gedenksteen Executies Zuid-Kennemerland War Memorial is a powerful testament. It reminds us of the human cost of war. Let us remember their sacrifice. Let us strive for a world free from oppression.
