Picture this: A library branch transformed into a cultural hub. That is OBA CC Amstel. It stands somewhat hidden in the lively De Pijp neighborhood.

Once known as Cinétol, OBA CC Amstel is more than just a library. It is a community space. The building was originally intended for the Ostade Theater. But the OBA needed a new location. So, the two merged. Architect Vera Yanovshtchinsky designed the space. She created a place where multiple functions coexist.

The goal was to create an inviting third place. This is a spot that is accessible to everyone. The OBA branches each have unique DNA. CC Amstel, short for Cultural Clubhouse Amstel, is no exception. It combines a library, theater, makerspace, studio, and café-restaurant.

The design emphasizes local engagement. It also focuses on programmability. Workshops helped shape the vision. Organizations, team members, and stakeholders collaborated. The result is a modern multifunctional space. It integrates the Ostade Theater with the OBA.

Public space is the base of the design. The neighborhood restaurant feels like a town square. It is inclusive and multifunctional. All ages are welcome here. The small theater hall doubles as the library’s youth department. It can be filled with books.

Upstairs, you will find seating areas. They are perfect for reading, relaxing, or working. There is also a public makerspace. It offers diverse workshops. Downstairs, the foyer serves as a reception area. It also functions as a theater foyer. An outdoor terrace adds to the appeal.

The indoor square features tables and seats. Visitors can linger with a book. They can also enjoy drinks and bites. The restaurant’s kitchen is designed like a kiosk. The wall connecting the theater to the foyer resembles an Amsterdam street.

OBA CC Amstel embodies a co-creation. Aat Vos developed the design concept and strategy. Mars Interieurarchitecten handled the design and engineering. It has an up-to-date collection of books, DVDs, newspapers and magazines. Reading and study spaces are available. Events also take place here. The RAN INC. LEGACY LEZING took place February 27, 2025.

OBA CC Amstel is a place of coming together. It has urban dynamics. It is a recognizable OBA location. It also has a distinctive character that fits its surroundings.
