A majestic structure looms before you. This is the Havengebouw. Its imposing presence dominates the Amsterdam skyline.

The Havengebouw isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to Amsterdam’s ambition. It’s a story of city planning. It’s a piece of mid-century modern architecture. The first pile was driven into the ground on May 10 1958. Mayor Gijsbert van Hall himself oversaw the start of this monumental undertaking.

Designed by the renowned Willem Dudok and Rob Magnée the Havengebouw was completed in 1960. At the time it stood as Amsterdam’s tallest building. For years it remained a solitary icon along the IJ river. Dudok’s vision included a second building. It was to be seven stories high and perpendicular to the main structure. Unfortunately only the Havengebouw itself was built. This remains a source of regret for many architecture enthusiasts. Dudok himself expressed this disappointment at the building’s opening.

The Havengebouw’s distinctive features include its fourteen floors and the striking round columns at the very top. The original entrance hall has been meticulously restored. A stunning artwork by Marte Röling graces the renovated space. A beautiful marble staircase once connected to Dudok’s envisioned second building. It was sadly demolished during a later renovation.

Notice the upper floors. They seem to recede slightly. A vibrant red steel structure surrounds them. This gives the glazed top floors their unique appearance. It almost looks like a control tower for air and sea traffic. In reality these floors housed a restaurant and a café. Both were also open to the public.

The Havengebouw stands as a municipal monument. It speaks to the vision and ambition of a city. The Havengebouw is a fascinating blend of history and modern design. It serves as a reminder that even the grandest plans can encounter unforeseen obstacles. Yet the Havengebouw stands tall a symbol of Amsterdam’s enduring spirit.
