Gazing across the water, can you envision the Haparandasteiger bustling with activity? The Haparandasteiger isn’t just a pier. It’s a bridge between Amsterdam’s past and present. Located at the tip of the Haparandadam, it connects the Houthaven district to the Westelijk Havengebied. The Haparandasteiger and the dam take their names from the Swedish port city of Haparanda. This port city, bordering Finland on the Gulf of Bothnia, was a major source of timber for Amsterdam. The dam itself is relatively new, constructed around 2008. It links the mainland at Dantzigerkade to an older breakwater between the Houthavens and the IJ River. Haparandasteiger, adjacent to the dam, once served as an administrative address. Now, moored at Haparandasteiger is the REM Eiland. This unique structure began its life as a North Sea platform, broadcasting television signals illegally in the 1960s. Today, transformed and relocated, it houses a restaurant and a digital concept space called “House of Newpeople.” Also nearby, you’ll find Pont 13, a repurposed 1937 ferry, now a restaurant, and De Bonte Zwaan, a floating hub of studios and businesses. Haparandasteiger is more than a pier. It’s a testament to Amsterdam’s evolving landscape. It represents a blend of history, innovation, and a touch of maritime rebellion.
