Lost in thought about Amsterdam’s bridges? You’re standing before Brug 44. This fixed bridge resides in Amsterdam-Centrum. Brug 44 arches gracefully over the Leidsegracht.

Brug 44 is on the Keizersgracht’s southwest bank. Though not a monument itself, it is surrounded by them. Two landing quays lie just west of Brug 44.

A bridge has existed here for centuries. City architect Daniël Stalpaert sketched it on his 1662 map. However, the area remained largely undeveloped then. Frederick de Wit’s 1688 map also depicts it.

A simple plate bridge replaced it in the late 19th century. The adjacent arch bridge over the Keizersgracht had collapsed. This raised fears about other arch bridges. Besides, people cared less about bridge aesthetics.

The situation changed by the 1970s. The bridge needed major maintenance. Amsterdam had regained its arch-bridge skills. Locals desired a bridge fitting the streetscape. The arch bridge returned in 1978.

Some called it an architectural lie. It mimicked 17th-century style. Yet, it featured a concrete span and foundation. After its completion, Brug 44 stood strong for years.

Unofficially, it was known as Hemonybrug. This honored Pieter and François Hemony. These brothers had a workshop near the bridge in the 17th century. It was at the corner of Keizersgracht and Molenpad. This is around the corner from Brug 44. It’s not near Hemonystraat and Hemonylaan in Amsterdam-Zuid. Those streets got their names in the late 19th century.

The Hemonybrug name sparked discussion in 2016. An audit revealed the name failed to meet naming guidelines. These guidelines govern inclusion in the Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings. Brug 44 appeared on list 2. List 2 contained unofficial bridge names. A public consultation would decide whether to officially approve or reject the name.

The Hemony name didn’t last. Since then, Brug 44 exists anonymously. It goes only by its number.

Today, Brug 44 quietly carries pedestrians and cyclists. It blends seamlessly into Amsterdam’s historic canal district. Take a moment to appreciate its understated elegance. This bridge stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s evolving architectural sensibilities.
