Did you know that Sloterkerk in Amsterdam has witnessed centuries of history? Standing before you is a testament to resilience. This Protestant church in the former village of Sloten has a story that goes back much further than its current building. Records show a church existed in Sloten as early as 1063. That initial structure was Catholic. It likely stood near the current Suchtelen van de Haarestraat in Amsterdam-Osdorp.

Around 1200 the church was moved to its present location. This is the site of the Sloterkerk you see today. However that building met a tragic end. In 1573 during the Eighty Years’ War the original Sloterkerk was destroyed by the Geuzen. Imagine the chaos the destruction wrought. The church lay in ruins until 1664. Then it was restored for Protestant services. A fascinating detail is that the church held a special place in the life of Rembrandt. His wife Saskia’s niece was married to the church’s preacher. Rembrandt even sketched the church several times. Moreover his granddaughter Titia van Rijn was married there.

By the mid-19th century the church was in disrepair. It was so dilapidated that it had to be replaced. The Sloterkerk we see today was built in 1861. It was consecrated after its construction. Interestingly elements from the old church were reused. The Knipscheer organ for instance. Today the Sloterkerk is not only a place of worship but also a vibrant cultural center. It hosts regular matinee concerts. Soloists ensembles and choirs perform there. The Friends of Sloterkerk Foundation organizes these events. Their dedication ensures the church’s legacy continues. The Sloterkerk’s past is rich. It’s present is active. Its future is bright. This remarkable building stands as a reminder of Amsterdam’s enduring spirit and its layered history.
