Consider Hendrik Antoon Lorentz. He was a Dutch physicist of immense importance. This statue commemorates his legacy. Lorentz shared the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pieter Zeeman. They won for their work on the Zeeman effect. Lorentz provided the theoretical explanation.
Hendrik Lorentz was born in Arnhem in 1853. He died in 1928 at the age of 74. Lorentz rose quickly in physics. He enrolled at Leiden at 17. By 25, he held the Chair of Theoretical Physics there. He kept that job until he died.
Lorentz was a contemporary of Einstein and Curie. Many consider him their equal. Yet, outside physics, he’s less known. Lorentz championed James Clerk Maxwell’s electromagnetism. He applied Maxwell’s equations to the electron before its discovery.
Lorentz found transformations were needed. These transformations kept Maxwell’s equations consistent. They adjusted distance and time between moving reference systems. Einstein used these “Lorentz transformations” in his theory of special relativity. Einstein admired Lorentz greatly and credited him.
In 1911, Lorentz chaired the first Solvay Conference. This conference brought together physics giants. Einstein, Curie, and Rutherford attended. Lorentz remained chairman of the Solvay Conferences until his death.

Lorentz proposed that moving bodies contract. This explained the Michelson-Morley experiment. He also added time dilation to his transformations. Poincaré later named these the Lorentz transformations.
Einstein used Lorentz’s concepts in his special relativity paper. The theory was initially called the Lorentz-Einstein theory. Lorentz’s work led to the development of atomic theory. It also influenced the theories of relativity.
After World War I, Lorentz helped establish a committee. It aimed to use science to solve civil problems. He also chaired a committee on the Afsluitdijk dam. His calculations accurately predicted the dam’s impact on water levels.
Lorentz’s monument in Arnhem was updated in 2008. The update added names of physicists who furthered his work. This shows his lasting influence. Lorentz conceived of the electron. He described them as extremely small charged particles.
