Ever wonder about the stories behind these stunning facades? De Dolphijn is one such gem. It stands proudly on the Singel canal. This is more than just a pretty building. It is a portal into Amsterdam’s rich past.

De Dolphijn dates back to around 1600. Its construction occurred sometime between 1599 and 1602. Hendrick Laurensz Spiegel commissioned it. He was a poet with a vision. De Dolphijn showcases Amsterdamse Renaissance style. Hendrick de Keyser designed it. He was a renowned architect.

Look closely. De Dolphijn has unique architectural features. It is an early example of a house with a side house. This was a precursor to the double canal house. The facade features two identical stepped gables. They embody the style of Hendrick de Keyser. Rolornaments adorn the facade. These were already becoming old-fashioned.

Originally, De Dolphijn even had access to the Herengracht. Until 1613, this was a back canal by the city walls.

In 1609, Volckert Overlander bought De Dolphijn. Later, in 1630, it passed to Frans Banning Cocq. Cocq is famous for Rembrandt’s painting, The Night Watch. He lived here when Rembrandt immortalized his militia company.

Around the mid-17th century, De Dolphijn was divided. It became two separate houses. The left one was named De Vergulde Dolphijn. The right one became De Kleynde Dolphijn. In 1679, Cornelis de Vlaming van Oudshoorn acquired both houses.

The division became more pronounced in 1863. The right house’s gable top was replaced. A straight cornice took its place. The right house was also enlarged.

A restoration took place in 1966-1967. This reversed the 19th-century changes. The right stepped gable was reconstructed. Old images guided the restoration. Abraham Storck’s 1684 depiction proved invaluable. The facade regained a single front door. However, the division into two houses remained.

The restoration wasn’t universally praised. Some critics considered it a sacrifice. They felt it prioritized historical accuracy. It came at the expense of modern living. Others like Mrs. Van Eeghen lauded the restoration. She said that Hendrick de Keyser’s house regained its old glory.

The reconstructed gable bears an inscription. It reads that Paul Guggenheim restored this facade to its original state in 1966.

Today, De Dolphijn stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s architectural evolution. It reflects changing tastes. It also reflects the city’s dedication to preserving its heritage.

As you stand before De Dolphijn, consider its story. It connects poets, painters, and merchants. This building encapsulates Amsterdam’s golden age. It illustrates the city’s enduring spirit.
