Four enormous boulders rest on a long steel base plate. This is the Bretten Suite 17 sculpture. Behind each boulder sits a solid steel block. The Bretten Suite 17 is part of a series of twenty sculptures. The first boulder is the lowest. It’s near the edge of the base plate. The second is larger and higher. The third is the largest and highest. The fourth is slightly smaller and lower than the third. A final block follows. The base plate extends a little beyond it. This immense colossus rests on four flat discs. Two discs support each end of the base plate. Two concrete slabs further support the discs. The Bretten Suite 17 is truly colossal. The base plate measures over eight meters long but is only 1.2 meters wide. It’s a slim carrying body. The four boulders look like cargo stacked from front to back. The four blocks between the boulders are like chimneys or wagon contours. The four discs lift the colossus 30 centimeters above the ground. It appears to float on waves or on high wheels above rails. All the proportions are just right. The base plate couldn’t be thinner. The steel blocks couldn’t be higher. The boulders couldn’t be bigger or smaller. Because all the proportions are coordinated the Bretten Suite 17 has a harmonious balanced appearance. It’s located near the cycle path along the Australia Road. It’s a beacon at the city’s edge. The Bretten Suite 17 marks the end of the urban sprawl a powerful statement of scale and form. The sculpture’s design is ingenious. It’s visually stunning and remarkably well-balanced. This is truly a memorable piece of art. The Bretten Suite 17 is more than just a sculpture. It’s an experience a testament to the artist’s vision. This masterful creation of Herbert Nouwens is a breathtaking sight. Its scale and design make it a true masterpiece.
