Gazing at the Opstandingskerk, has anyone ever told you about its unusual nickname? Locals affectionately call it “De Kolenkit,” which translates to “The Coal Scuttle.” This playful moniker comes from the striking resemblance of its 48-meter tower to the old coal buckets used to fuel stoves. This tower isn’t just a local curiosity, it holds the title of the tallest post-war church tower in Amsterdam. The Opstandingskerk stands proudly in the Bos en Lommerplein, a significant landmark in Amsterdam West. Built in 1956, it was designed by the renowned architect Marius Duintjer. He envisioned a space that served both spiritual and social needs. This vision is reflected in the church’s unique design, a two-story structure housing a community center on the ground floor and the church hall above. Duintjer’s design blends modern and traditional elements. The church’s red brick exterior, constructed in Flemish bond, exudes a classic charm. However, the harmonic-shaped side walls, punctuated by vertical glass strips, introduce a distinctly modern touch. Inside, soft, almost mystical light filters through these tall windows, creating a serene atmosphere. The interior, predominantly white with light wood accents, enhances this sense of tranquility. Duintjer carefully considered the layout, placing the altar, baptismal font, and pulpit on a raised platform to create a harmonious balance between word and liturgy. A freestanding wooden cross, a special request from the original congregation, stands at the center of this platform. The church initially served the Dutch Reformed community but later became home to a Pentecostal congregation. Despite facing the threat of demolition, the Opstandingskerk was lovingly restored in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Today, it stands as a testament to Duintjer’s vision, a beloved community hub, and a striking example of post-war architecture. Its prominent tower, visible from afar, continues to serve as a beacon and a reminder of Amsterdam’s rich history. So, next time you see the Opstandingskerk, remember its unique nickname and the rich history it represents. It’s more than just a church; it’s a symbol of resilience, community, and a blend of architectural styles that continues to captivate.
