Across the Reguliersgracht stands Brug 81. A seemingly unassuming bridge it holds centuries of Amsterdam’s history within its stone. Brug 81 isn’t just a crossing. It’s a silent witness to the city’s evolution.

Its location at the northern edge of the Lijnbaansgracht is key. This spot has seen bridges for centuries. Before Brug 81 other bridges spanned this waterway. Some crossed the Reguliersgracht itself. Others connected to now-vanished canals like the Nieuwe Looiersgracht and the Achtergracht. These were filled in long ago transforming the landscape.

Even Daniel Stalpaert’s 1662 map shows a bridge here. Imagine the infirmary standing nearby. Frederik de Wit’s 1688 drawing shows a fully built-up area. Brug 81 has been a vital link for over 350 years.

A major transformation occurred in 1889. The city announced a project. They aimed to renew and widen Brug 81. Jacob Olie captured the bridge in his photos. We know then it was an iron girder bridge. It had wooden beams and child-head paving stones. Elegant 19th-century balustrades lined its sides.

This design remained essentially unchanged until 1976. Plans to fill in parts of the Reguliersgracht and Lijnbaansgracht were considered in 1906. They were never fully realized. Eventually the old iron bridge was replaced. Brug 81 became the humpback bridge we see today. It likely gained a concrete deck. Whether the foundations were updated remains unknown.

The bridge stands near two significant buildings. Reguliersgracht 134-136 is a national monument. Reguliersgracht 111 holds municipal monument status. Brug 81 itself though relatively old isn’t officially a monument. It’s deemed too young for that honor.

Recent years have brought further maintenance. The appearance of Brug 81 however changed very little. The bridge continues its silent watch over the canal. It connects Amsterdam’s past to its present. Brug 81 remains a symbol of the city’s enduring spirit.
