Beyond its immediate appearance, what story does the Poort van Nieuwendam tell? This artwork by Marcel Smink stands proudly near the Schellingwouder Bridge. It is located along the Zuiderzeeweg. The Poort van Nieuwendam wasn’t always here. In 2011, plans threatened its existence due to road network changes. But the artist insisted on its relocation.

Let’s delve into the story of this unique structure. Amsterdam once boasted many city gates. Think of the Muiderpoort and the Munttoren. But Amsterdam Noord developed later. It lacked these historic entrances. Marcel Smink changed that in 1999. He created the Poort van Nieuwendam.

The design has roots in the gatehouses of the 1920s. Smink’s gate features a concrete curve paved with bricks. Some see it as a falling gate. However, Smink views it as an upward-curling section of road. A piece of the old Zuiderzeeweg from the 1930s lies behind it. Smink paved it with the same concrete bricks as the gate.

The Poort van Nieuwendam marks a transition. Approaching from Nieuwendam, it’s the entrance to the Ringweg. Coming from the highway, it signals the start of the city. It tells drivers to slow down. It is a gateway to a different world.

The Poort van Nieuwendam is more than just a visual marker. Smink aimed for layers of meaning. He compares it to Umberto Eco’s novel *The Name of the Rose*. You can interpret it in multiple ways. It can be a simple folly or a signal to drivers. It can also be a monument to the old Zuiderzeeweg.

The Poort van Nieuwendam measures 5.7 meters wide. Its height reaches 6.3 meters. The area across the Zuiderzeeweg complements the gate. It features a rhythmic pattern of pollard willows. Two reed locks and common butterbur complete the scene.

Marcel Smink involved the community in creating this artwork. Delegations from buurtbeheren Markengouw and Werengouw participated. They helped shape the final design. The Poort van Nieuwendam stands where the old Zuiderzeeweg used to be. Smink preserved 100 meters of the unused road. He raised it two meters above ground level. Then he curved it into this monumental gate. The Poort van Nieuwendam now confronts viewers more directly. Marcel Smink believes this enhances its impact.
