Have you ever dreamt of a land of plenty? That is precisely where the story of Kockengen begins. This charming village in the Dutch province of Utrecht carries a name that echoes with medieval fantasies.

Kockengen, a part of the municipality of Stichtse Vecht, lies a mere 11 kilometers northeast of Woerden. Its history is as captivating as its name, which refers to Cockaigne. This was a medieval fictional land of plenty. Imagine fields overflowing with milk and honey.

The village’s story starts around 1307. Kockengen began as a 12th-century cultivation concession. Cleverly, its founders chose the name to entice farmers to settle here. Many of these early settlers were serfs hailing from France.

A church graced Kockengen in the 14th century. The church’s tower, which still stands today, dates back to 1635. The 17th century brought prosperity to Kockengen. Good water connections to Amsterdam and Utrecht fueled its growth. By 1840, Kockengen was home to 677 people.

A vital piece of Kockengen’s history is the Kockengense Molen. This polder mill, constructed in 1653, served a crucial purpose. It pumped excess water from the polder. Redesigned in 1675, the windmill diligently worked until 1962. An electric pumping station then took over, but the windmill remains as an emergency backup.

Until 1989, Kockengen stood as a separate municipality. Then it became part of Breukelen until 2011. Now, Kockengen is part of Stichtse Vecht.

Today, Kockengen is a vibrant village with a population of 3,445. It has local shops, like a supermarket, a butcher, and flower shop. For recreation, there is a swimming pool called De Koet.

Kockengen also features five churches, a sculpture called ‘De Rustende Boer’ on the Driestammenplein, and the old town hall on Kerkplein.
