Twin brothers offering free medical care. Can you imagine such a thing? That brings us to Heiligen Cosmas en Damianus. This place stands as a testament to faith and healing.

Heiligen Cosmas en Damianus embodies a legacy stretching back centuries. It is rooted in the story of two remarkable saints. Their tale began in the 3rd century in Syria. Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers. They were known for their exceptional medical skills.

These brothers offered their services without payment. This selfless practice earned them the title “Agioi Anargyroi” meaning “holy moneyless ones”. Their generosity attracted many to Christianity.

They faced persecution under Emperor Diocletianus. Arrested by Lycias, they refused to renounce their faith. They endured torture. They were hung on a cross and stoned. Arrows were shot at them. Finally, they were beheaded in 303 AD.

Churches were built in their honor. Their veneration spread. Relics were deemed miraculous. Churches dedicated to them appeared in Jerusalem, Egypt, and Mesopotamia.

Paus Felix III converted the Temple of Romulus into a church. It was dedicated to Heiligen Cosmas en Damianus. This occurred near the Roman Forum.

The Dutch Cardinal Johannes Willebrands received this church as his titular church in 1975. Heiligen Cosmas en Damianus are patron saints of medicine. This includes doctors, pharmacists, and other medical professions. They are often depicted with medical instruments. For example, the Martinikerk in Groningen has an image. It shows them with a pisglas used to diagnose illnesses via urine.

Their feast day is celebrated on September 26. Storm floods struck the Netherlands on their feast day. These are known as the Cosmas-en-Damianusvloed. These floods impacted Zeeland and Flanders.

Skulls believed to be theirs are kept in Madrid. They were brought from Rome to Bremen. Later, they went to Bamberg. Empress Maria, daughter of Charles V, donated them to the Clarisses in Madrid.

Other relics are in Munich’s church of Sint-Michiel. The Stephansdom in Vienna also claims to have their skulls since 1413. The church of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice has additional relics.

Heiligen Cosmas en Damianus remain symbols of selfless service. They represent unwavering faith. Their story echoes through the ages. It reminds us of the healing power of compassion.
