Once, this area was an open tidal space. It eventually evolved into the Alkmaardermeer.

Welcome to the Alkmaardermeer. It is a beautiful lake with a fascinating past. It’s one of the few remaining veenmeers in Noord-Holland. These are peat lakes formed by the erosion of peatland. Most others have been turned into polders.

Around 6500 years ago the rising sea levels stabilized. Sediment built up along the Dutch coast. This created strandwalls which are like natural coastal barriers. Akersloot just west of us is one of the oldest. Around 5000 years ago these strandwalls formed a complex. This caused the area behind them to become fresh water. Eventually, high peat formed. This peatland flooded after medieval reclamation.

To the west and northeast of Weijenbus are kreek ridges. They formed near the Oer-IJ estuary. The mouth of this estuary was near Castricum. This was between approximately 3500 and 2100 years ago. The creeks and riverbanks collected sandy material. This material was more resistant to compaction than the surrounding peat. So, the creeks appear as ridges in the landscape today. Late Iron Age and Roman settlements existed on these ridges between Weijenbus and Vroonmeer. The creek ridges and tidal flat deposits were later partially covered by peat. This peat largely disappeared after medieval reclamation. This made the creek ridges visible again.

The Alkmaardermeer itself formed from smaller bodies of water. Storms eroded the banks of these pools. This led to the creation of larger lakes. During the Late Middle Ages, the peatland was reclaimed. This further expanded the Alkmaardermeer. Other lakes were drained in the 17th century. But the Alkmaardermeer and Uitgeestermeer were kept to store water from other polders. It functions as a boezemsysteem for the Schermer. A boezemsysteem is a network of waterways used to manage water levels in polders.

Today the peatland continues to subside. This degrades the peat. But it also accentuates the creek relief. The Alkmaardermeer now serves as a crucial part of the water management system. It helps control water levels in the region.

The Alkmaardermeer has also been used as a route for ships. They travel from the Zaanstreek to the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. This allows them to reach places like Alkmaar and Den Helder.

The area has settlements from the Iron Age and Roman times. These settlements were located on the creek ridges between Weijenbus and Vroonmeer. The lake also became part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. This was due to its low-lying position. The Stelling van Amsterdam was a defensive line of fortifications and inundations.

Today the Alkmaardermeer is a popular recreational area. People enjoy boating, surfing and waterskiing here. There are also recreational areas along the shores. These include Dorregeest, De Hoorne, Uiterdam, De Woudhaven, Zwaansmeer and eiland Pannekoek.

Take a moment to appreciate the Alkmaardermeer. It is not just a lake. It is a living piece of history. It shows how the Dutch landscape has changed over time. It is a testament to the ongoing battle against the water.
