Did a koekjesman tumbling into the mud give Koekjesbrug its curious name? Right here, spanning the Singelgracht, this charming bridge carries a history as delightful as its name. Koekjesbrug, bridge number 170, connects the Bosboom Toussaintstraat to the Nieuwe Passeerdersstraat. It stands as a gateway between Amsterdam-Centrum and Amsterdam-West. Long before the current Koekjesbrug graced this spot, a simple ferry transported people across the Singelgracht starting in 1879. A wooden footbridge followed in 1884, later replaced by an iron structure in 1896. This iron bridge, though wider, eventually proved inadequate for the growing traffic to the expanding western city. In 1911, the current Koekjesbrug emerged. Interestingly, the ironwork and pillars of its predecessor were repurposed for another bridge, also briefly known as Koekjesbrug, near Korte ‘s-Gravesandestraat. The Koekjesbrug we see today rests on sturdy brick abutments. Two iron yokes in a cross-bond pattern stand on the bridge piers supporting the iron girders. Since 1995, this charming bridge has been recognized as a municipal monument. Wichert Arend de Graaf, an engineer with the Public Works Department, contributed to its design. A unique feature of Koekjesbrug is the western slope integrated into the Nassaukade roadway. This creates a noticeable incline as you approach the bridge from the west. Within the eastern abutment, you can spot the end of a stone culvert. This culvert houses an underground channel, stretching 93 meters long and three meters wide, running under Nieuwe Passeerderstraat. It connects a dead-end section of the Lijnbaansgracht to the Singelgracht. This channel predates the current bridge, connecting to the earlier iron bridge as well. Now, about that name, Koekjesbrug, which translates to “Cookie Bridge.” Three theories attempt to explain its origin. One suggests it’s named after a koekjesman, or cookie vendor, who frequented the area. Another points to chocolate cookies sold at a nearby cocoa mill. A third theory links the name to a gardener, Mr. Pannekoek, who owned land beside the bridge. Perhaps, the true story is a blend of these tales, a sprinkle of history baked into the name itself. As Martin Bril so aptly put it in 2007, “It’s a beautiful, old bridge, and I also like the name, for a bridge. Every time I cross it, I murmur it to myself.” So, next time you cross Koekjesbrug, remember the cookie vendor, the cocoa mill, the gardener, and the echo of history in its sweet name.
