Was the Aderpolder always an island? Picture this. You stand before the Aderpolder a polder in Zuid-Holland. It’s a unique place a former waterschap. Now part of Kaag en Braassem it once existed as an island within the Haarlemmermeer. Before the Haarlemmermeer’s drainage the Aderpolder and the Huigsloterpolder formed an island. After the drainage it became a separate polder. Think of it a tranquil island between the Haarlemmermeer ringvaart and the Kagerplassen.

The Aderpolder is more than just land. It’s a 71-hectare expanse. Over 95% is grassland a typical Dutch veenweidegebied. Its average height is -1.80 meters NAP. The polder’s boundaries are clear. The ringvaart the Balgerij De Kever the Boerenbuurt and the Ade define its edges.

The Aderpolder’s history is rich with ingenious solutions. Until 1881 a poldermolen a windmill did the draining. After a devastating fire a steam pump took over. It worked until 1940. Fuel shortages during World War II prompted a return to wind power. A new windmill the Adermolen was built. It still works today. It’s maintained by volunteers. A modern electric pump installed in 1985 handles the main drainage. It was completely updated in 2010. The Rijnlandse Molenstichting owns the Adermolen since 1985.

The Aderpolder is ringed by approximately 4.3 kilometers of peat dikes. These dikes constantly sink. They require regular reinforcement and raising. In 2011 they underwent a major strengthening. Maintaining these dikes is vital for protecting the polder. It prevents flooding and preserves this unique landscape.

The Aderpolder is more than just a geographical feature. It’s a testament to human ingenuity. It represents the ongoing battle against water. It showcases the Dutch spirit of innovation. It is a quiet corner of beauty. It’s a place where history meets modern technology. It is a place to visit. A place to remember. A place to discover the magic of the Aderpolder.
