How would you like to receive knowledge? Imagine receiving it as a tangible form. That’s what Frans van der Burgt captured in his Kennisoverdracht Sculpture.

This artwork stands here in Amsterdam-Zuid. Specifically, it resides in the Beatrixpark. The Kennisoverdracht Sculpture depicts a schoolmaster and his students. Two students seem burdened by books.

Let’s look closer at the figures. The large seated figure on the left is the teacher. He imparts his wisdom. To the right sits a smaller student. He attentively receives instruction. Another figure sits on the ground. He dedicates himself to learning and study. The last figure kneels on books. This represents mastering knowledge.

Frans van der Burgt created Kennisoverdracht in 1965. The sculpture is made of natural stone and rests on concrete pillars. Originally, it stood at the entrance of the Sint-Nicolaaslyceum. Lau Peters, the school’s architect, commissioned the work. In the 2010s, the Sint-Nicolaaslyceum was renovated. During this time, the Kennisoverdracht Sculpture was moved. Now it stands behind the building.

The Kennisoverdracht Sculpture consists of open spaces. It portrays a master with three students and a row of books. Gravity seems to weigh heavily on the books the students carry. The figures and objects balance each other. Together they support the books.

Van der Burgt created more sculptures with the theme of school children and care. Later in life, he focused on nature’s beauty. He also explored the togetherness of people. Many of his works are located in Noord-Brabant.

Take a moment to appreciate Kennisoverdracht. It embodies the transfer of learning. It also represents the weight and balance of education. It’s a lasting tribute to knowledge.
