Envision a beacon of light. That’s Wi Eegi Kerki. It means “Our Own Church” in Surinamese. This church stands as a testament to faith and community in Amsterdam Zuidoost.

Wi Eegi Kerki’s story is unique. In a time when churches are repurposed, this one was newly built. The Evangelische Broedergemeente Amsterdam wanted a modern church. They approached 70F architecture in 2006.

What makes this even more special? The community raised the funds themselves. It took 15 years of saving. This shows their deep commitment. Despite a modest budget, the result is stunning.

The design process was thorough. There were intense discussions with the client. The plans were presented to Amsterdam Zuidoost’s strict supervision committee in 2009. Construction finished in 2013.

Notice the light. Wi Eegi Kerki acts as a beacon in the Bijlmer area. The church constantly radiates a yellow-white light. Light and the color white hold great importance. They are central to the Evangelische Broedergemeente’s liturgy.

Step inside Wi Eegi Kerki. You’ll find a contrast. Sunlight enters through a hidden skylight. It illuminates the church hall. The entrance and kitchen form the heart of the church. Meeting halls and the church hall branch off from there. Flexible meeting rooms are upstairs.

The church hall evokes a powerful feeling. You walk under a balcony. The nine-meter-high space feels grander. A skylight runs the width of the thirteen-meter-high tower. Indirect sunlight falls on the white wall. You must turn to see its source.

Observe the exterior. Wi Eegi Kerki has a monolithic presence. It is built on a terp. The facade uses a mixed yellow-white stone in a wild bond pattern. Raised flowerbeds surround the church. These offer seating. They extend the communal feel of the interior.

The glass facade above the main entrance always glows. It’s a welcome sign to the neighborhood. Wi Eegi Kerki embodies community. It represents a place of belonging. It is a place where faith shines brightly.
